Yi Bai Shuǐmò

A single line, repeated, until the paper turns black.

A work is not made in a single sitting.
It settles, layer after layer, over weeks.

« The painters of the Song made works dense with a thousand, ten thousand strokes, none of them superfluous. »

Three elements, nothing more

The painter’s page
Detail: bundles of parallel lines, crossed

The line 线条

No texture strokes, no dotting, no wash. Straight lines, parallel, crossed, repeated, a vocabulary reduced to a single unit, inherited from fifteen years of fishing-net paintings.

Detail: the grain of a black built from layered calligraphy

Black 黑

Obtained by copying out, in pale ink, front and back, layer upon layer, a Tang-dynasty cursive-script classic, until no character remains legible. A deliberately useless labor.

Detail: a black mass and a wide reserve of white

White 白

What was never painted. Leaves too pale, mountains not dark enough: all of it disappears into the paper, and that is what lets the work breathe.
